This anonymous etching, “Silenus Supported by a Young Bacchant,” depicts a scene from Roman mythology. Silenus, the drunken tutor of Bacchus, is shown here supported by a young follower, or bacchant. The scene is set in a landscape with trees and a barrel of wine, further emphasizing the theme of revelry associated with Silenus. The print was created between 1520 and 1575, reflecting the artistic trends of the Northern Renaissance. The dramatic chiaroscuro and detailed figures are characteristic of printmaking during this period. The work is currently housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
