This 16th-century engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi, titled "Silenus supported by a young bacchant," depicts the drunken god Silenus being supported by a young bacchant. Silenus is a companion of the god Dionysus, who is associated with wine and revelry. The engraving is a fine example of the Italian Renaissance style, with its emphasis on classical mythology and meticulous detail. The image is rich in symbolism, including the vine and grapes, which represent Dionysus, and the two heads at the bottom of the scene, which may be allusions to the god's worship. Raimondi was a famous Italian engraver who produced many copies of works by Raphael, including the "Silenus" engraving. The etching is now part of the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam.
