Kinder Album, born in 1982, made this Untitled work with watercolour, and when you see that watery medium, you know you're dealing with process. The colours are laid down in semi-transparent washes, creating soft and blended forms. The emotion is anything but! There's anger here, and a figure cowering in a dark room. The stark contrast between the angry figure and the darkness really sets off the piece for me. And the texture – or lack thereof – is super interesting. Everything is pretty smooth, but in the darkness, you can see the drips of the watercolour. It’s not about hiding the process but exposing it. That black rectangle dominates the space and really makes me think about the relationship between exterior appearance and interior truth. It reminds me a little of some of the psychological paintings by Edvard Munch, but with a feminist twist. Overall, it's a conversation about how we make meaning through art.
