These images, mounted on a page in an album, really strike me, with their monochrome tones. I love how each separate photograph has its own perspective. I wonder what the artist was thinking when they created this? Or if artist is even the right word to use. It feels a bit like spying, as if we are not supposed to be looking at someone else's family album. Did they work on a boat, I wonder? Were they wealthy enough to travel? The way they've grouped the photographs together invites us to think about the connections between them, and about how seeing something from different angles makes us experience it in a different way. This piece reminds me of the work of Gerhard Richter, who was also a painter. Although he painted in color he had an interest in photographic images. But ultimately, what I love most about this kind of work is that it encourages us to find our own interpretation. Because, truly, there are no mistakes!
