Robert Frank captured “Convention 20” with his camera, a sequence of moments developed into a single photographic print. Just look at all those faces, all those people attending the political convention. Frank captures the crowd in a way that feels both distant and intimate. You can almost feel the heat of the moment, the energy of the crowd. The rows of images stacked together, a series of images placed next to each other to create the artwork... it's a bit like memory, how one moment blurs into the next. He’s got nuns in there, politicians, a band... Looking at this, I can’t help but think of other artists who’ve wrestled with capturing the American experience, like Walker Evans, for instance. There's something so distinctly American about this photograph, but Frank shows the other side. It reminds me that we're all connected in this ongoing artistic conversation. We build upon each other's ideas, challenge each other's perspectives, and keep the dialogue going.
