This ‘Untitled’ work is by Luciano Bartolini, though I don’t know exactly when he made it, it really shows his incredible way with colour and mark making. The background is a kind of dry yellow, a flat colour, that makes the other shapes really pop. I love the way Bartolini sets up the space – the dark, looming form on one side against the bright flame on the other creates such a sense of drama. I like the way he doesn’t fuss too much. The paint isn’t overworked, but has a kind of direct, raw quality. There's a real boldness in that jagged black triangle. And then there's the surprise of those gold curlicues, adding a touch of whimsy. Bartolini reminds me a little of Forrest Bess, in the way he creates these personal symbols and images that seem to come from a really deep, inner place. Ultimately, it’s the kind of painting that invites you to bring your own story, your own interpretations. There is never one way to see a painting, and this is one that lets you see a new meaning each time.
