Endre Rozsda made this painting, “Flying,” using oil on canvas, and what strikes me is the way forms emerge and dissolve. I’m really taken by the big looping gestures in black. They carve out space for areas of soft blues, reds, and yellows. You can almost see Rozsda at work, adding layer upon layer, letting intuition guide his hand. I bet he was working and reworking passages, turning chaos into something that feels like a dreamscape. The paint application is rich, but not too thick. These hues create a unique emotional landscape. This feels like a deeply personal exploration, a window into Rozsda’s subconscious, but, like all paintings, we see it through the lens of our own experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Painters are always speaking to one another across time, and the act of painting is an invitation into a space of possibility. Like life, painting embraces uncertainty and allows for multiple readings.
