This Man's Aba, or coat, was made anonymously with dyed cotton in an unknown location. The red dyed cotton gives the coat its base color, against which the geometric patterns are presented. The cotton would have likely been woven on a loom, and then dyed to achieve its rich color. Look closely, and you can see that the geometric patterns at the sleeves, hem and chest are made from supplementary weft; these patterns have been woven into the base cloth with great skill and care. It is a testament to the artistry of the weaver, who has skillfully manipulated the threads to create these intricate designs. This kind of labor-intensive textile production carries its own social significance. Garments like this were likely high-status objects, embodying considerable cultural and economic capital. Paying close attention to materials and making helps us understand the full meaning of the garment, challenging any simple distinction between art and craft.
