This is a portrait engraving by Theodor Matham, a Dutch artist born in 1605 and who died in 1676, titled “Portret van Johannes Buggaeus.” The engraving is a representation of Johannes Buggaeus, a prominent figure in the Dutch community, in a classic oval frame. The image was made between 1636 and 1676 and is currently on display at the Rijksmuseum. The engraving is a good example of Dutch Baroque portraiture. The use of shadowing gives the engraving a three-dimensional effect, and the inscription at the bottom, in Latin, provides biographical information about Johannes Buggaeus.
