Frans Hogenberg created this print, “Plattegrond van Palmanova,” using engraving sometime between 1578 and 1590. It depicts the layout of Palmanova, a town in northeastern Italy. This bird's eye view shows a star-shaped fortification surrounding a meticulously planned city. We see this type of planned city emerging during the Renaissance. The emphasis on geometric order reflects a desire to apply rational principles to urban design. But the highly defensive structure speaks volumes about the political and social climate of the time, which was shaped by warfare and territorial disputes. Hogenberg's print provides a visual record of a specific historical moment. Architectural plans such as these are invaluable for scholars. Through careful analysis, historians can uncover insights into the social, political, and cultural values that shaped the design and construction of cities like Palmanova.
