This is a photograph by Edizione Brogi of a sculpture in the Vatican Museums, depicting a two-horse chariot, or ‘biga’. The image is mostly monochrome; a kind of memento mori. It's like the artist is trying to capture the ghost of something. I can imagine the original sculptor, long ago, wrestling with the stone. The artist may have had to consider so many questions: How do you make stone convey the ideas of movement, weight, or speed? How to give it the illusion of life? The Brogi image here preserves that same feeling of artistic struggle. The rearing horse is so intense - full of potential energy. This photograph reminds us that art is not just about the final product but also about the process, the exchange of ideas, and the enduring conversation between artists across time.
