This chromolithograph of the Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III of Spain was created by Allen & Ginter as part of their World's Decorations series for cigarette cards. The design consists of two distinct formal elements: the central medal set against a stippled background, and the ornamental corners. The medal itself is meticulously rendered, a complex layering of geometric shapes from the central oval to the Maltese cross. The surrounding wreath and ribbon add curvature which soften the otherwise severe geometry. Notice the limited palette of blues, whites, golds and greens which contributes to the image's regal feel. The ornamental corners consist of curvilinear foliate designs that serve to frame the central image while also flattening the composition. This card utilizes a combination of symmetry and detail to convey a sense of prestige. The juxtaposition of sharp geometric forms and organic curves, invites us to consider the interplay between structure and ornament in the creation of cultural meaning.
