This fashion plate, titled "Très Parisien, 1923", was made with ink and pochoir. It has such a breezy take on form, right? I love the confidence in the simple outlines, and the way blocks of flat colour build up the figure. Notice how the black dress contrasts with the pale flesh and the off-white fur stole, then the little splashes of green and yellow in the background! It feels so fresh, so immediate. I’m especially drawn to the hem of the dress, how the artist has let the lines of the skirt blur and blend, kind of dissolving into the sandy background. The piece is a reminder that artmaking is an act of conversation, that visual ideas get passed down through generations, transformed and reinterpreted. It makes me think of Erté and his decorative, linear works, though this feels a little more modern, a little less concerned with perfection. It all just feels so easy, you know?
