This fashion plate, “Très Parisien, 1925, No. 9, Pl. 11: Création BECHOFF - LA DAME EN NOIR" was made with print and gouache. It's all about line, and the way it describes form. I love how the figure is so graphic, really playing with the contrast of black and white. The artist isn’t trying to trick us with illusion. It’s a flat image but still manages to communicate a lot of information. Take a look at the strong vertical lines of the coat, offset by the furry collar and cuffs. This simple repetition gives the composition rhythm. The background is a wash of warm browns, with hints of blue in the lower register. It creates a sense of depth without disrupting the overall flatness of the image. This reminds me a little of some of the pattern designers, like Sonia Delaunay. It has that same sense of joyful abstraction. It really emphasizes art as a conversation across different disciplines.
