Lala Eve Rivol made this artwork, "Petroglyph," with crayon on paper. It's like looking at a page from a sketchbook, where Rivol is exploring different graphic languages. There's a real tactile sense to it, like you could almost feel the grain of the paper. The crayon marks are direct and unassuming. It's playful, the way she repeats shapes and motifs, like those little lizard figures, each one slightly different. I'm drawn to the lower left quadrant, to the sunburst form. The radiating lines and the concentric circles feel ancient, but also totally contemporary. You can see the way the crayon is layered, how the black and red overlap, creating a kind of vibrating energy. It reminds me of Hilma af Klint's diagrams. There's a freedom in Rivol's work, a sense of just letting the hand lead, and that's what makes it so engaging.
