This is Matsutani’s “Red-Sun-P,” an undated artwork of contrasting colors. It’s tempting to view this work through the lens of post-war Japanese art. The stark geometry, the flat blocks of color, and the overall sense of graphic simplicity aligns it with international trends in abstract painting and design that defined much art in this period. However, the rising sun motif has strong political ties to the wartime era in Japan, one that Matsutani may well be addressing here. There are many ways to consider how cultural contexts shape artistic production. By looking at the political and economic structures in place at the time, we can begin to understand the social conditions that influenced Matsutani’s creative choices. Accessing the institutions, archives, and personal accounts that form part of the history of art can radically alter our understanding of its role in society.
