This black and white print, titled "Vignet til et nytårsdigt," which translates to Vignette for a New Year's Poem, was made in 1878 by an anonymous artist. The print shows an old bearded man juxtaposed with a baby holding a flag in front of a sunset. These are allegorical figures of old age and new beginnings, the end of the year and the beginning of a new one. The artist is using well known iconographic symbols to represent the passage of time. Looking at this artwork, one can't help but reflect on the passage of time, the fleeting nature of youth, and the inevitability of aging. The artist's choice to depict these universal experiences through symbolic figures invites viewers to contemplate their own relationship with time and mortality. It is a meditation on how society values youth and experience.
