Joakim Skovgaard sketched this design, titled "Udkast til samme bind som recto," using graphite. Skovgaard was working during a time when faith and national identity were deeply intertwined in Denmark. We see this in the ethereal figure at the center, possibly a representation of spiritual awakening or enlightenment. Notice the swirling patterns surrounding it; these could symbolize the currents of cultural and religious thought that were shaping Danish society. Skovgaard lived in a society that was predominantly patriarchal, which might explain the figure's androgynous features, seemingly pushing back against rigid gender norms. The work also invites us to reflect on the personal quest for meaning and truth, at a time when traditional religious narratives were being questioned. This sketch serves as a poignant reminder of the intertwined nature of identity, faith, and the search for understanding in a changing world.
