This is a page of script, written by J.A. Jerichau II, sometime before 1916. You can see a pressure and flow in the inky marks, like the artist is thinking through his hand. The marks are dark and confident against the off-white of the page; they are formed with an unhesitating hand. I love how the words cluster together, a whole world of meaning in each little stroke. Look at the way the individual letters lean and loop, like tiny acrobats performing on a page. The slant of the hand gives the work a feeling of movement, it wants to take off, to go somewhere. This reminds me of Cy Twombly’s scrawls – these artists are both working with language and expression. To me, art is about embracing not knowing, about the endless possibilities that open up when you let go of fixed ideas.
