Valerii Lamakh created this drawing, a page from his 'Book of Schemes,' using pencil and colored crayon. We see a cube rendered in linear perspective, its faces adorned with circles, directional arrows, and smaller, capsule-like shapes. The cube, a symbol of stability and order, is disrupted by dynamic lines. Arrows, traditionally symbols of direction and purpose, crisscross the composition. These elements create a sense of spatial tension, engaging the viewer in a visual puzzle. Consider how ancient cultures, from the Egyptians to the Greeks, used geometric forms to represent cosmic order. Here, Lamakh reinterprets these forms, creating a new system of representation, a 'scheme.' This recalls Renaissance perspective studies, but infused with a modern, almost chaotic energy. The image is suggestive of a mind grappling with the complexities of structure and movement, connecting the viewer to the artist's own mental space.
