Al Held made this geometrical drawing, "Kyoto-wa", using what looks like coloured pencils. It's all about lines making shapes, building up a kind of architectural space. Look at how he uses colour - soft blues, yellows, and reds - to define the edges of these shapes. It’s like he's building a world out of geometry, but with a light touch. The lines aren't always perfect, and that's what makes it interesting. The way one form seems to pass through another. There's this sense of everything being in motion, constantly shifting and changing. Like the way the colour shifts along the lines. It makes me think of Sol LeWitt, but with a warmer, more human feel. It's this idea that art is a conversation, a way of seeing the world that's always open to interpretation.
