This fashion plate by G-P. Joumard, "Très Parisien", was made in 1925 with some kind of printmaking technique. It’s all about capturing a moment, a mood, right? Look at the way the dress pattern flattens and distorts the figure. It's like the dress is wearing the woman, not the other way around! The colour palette feels very limited, muted tones that speak of another time. But within that, the details are so precise - the little blocks of blue and white in the fabric, the soft rendering of the woman's face. It’s almost as if the fashion is more alive than the person wearing it. The overall effect is of something fleeting, a moment caught in time. It makes me think of the way artists like Manet used fashion to explore themes of modernity and artifice. Like this image, his paintings open a space of imagination around the clothing, not just the people.
