This fan box by Duvelleroy is made from cardboard covered in shiny striped pink, red, and silver paper with gold trim. It’s so playful, it reminds me of artmaking as a process. When I look at this box, I think of the paper itself. It's got this reflective quality that makes the colours pop – that shimmery silver against the bold pink is such a fun contrast! And I love how the stripes create this rhythmic pattern, almost like a musical score, so physical is the materiality. It’s tempting to imagine it displayed alongside the pop art of Andy Warhol. He played with similar bold color combinations and surface effects, though often on a much larger scale. This little box is a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation, not a competition. You might think one artwork is better than another, but it’s not, it’s just different.
