This is a coupon of parasol cotton with beige stripes on either side, made by Gustav Schnitzler. The first thing that grabs me here is the softness of it, this isn’t a harsh pattern, it’s a quiet one. It's a whisper of design, an exercise in close-valued shades, perfect for blocking out sunlight. The texture is everything; you can almost feel the give of the cotton, how it might crease and fold. There's something deeply satisfying about the precision of the stripes, offset by the subtle weave. Notice the detail in the beige stripes. They’re not solid, but patterned with these tiny shapes - squares maybe? It’s this kind of intricacy that elevates it. Cotton like this reminds me a little of Agnes Martin, how she worked with repetition and subtle variation. Both artists, in their own ways, show us that less can indeed be more. It’s a reminder that art isn’t always about making a big statement. Sometimes, it’s about finding beauty in the everyday, in the quiet moments, in the gentle patterns that surround us.
