This inrō, a small case traditionally worn by Japanese men, was created by Koma Yasutada between 1771 and 1799. The inrō is made of lacquered wood and features an intricate design of clamshells and fireflies on a gold-leaf background. The inrō is adorned with a netsuke, a small ivory figure of a man riding a clamshell. Inrō were used to carry small personal items such as medicine, seals, or money, and the netsuke served as a toggle to keep the inrō attached to the wearer's sash. This inrō is a fine example of Japanese craftsmanship and artistry during the Edo period.
