Branko Bačanović made this black and white poster, Collegium Artisticum 91, sometime in 1991, probably using a screen printing technique. I'm imagining the artist working with stencils or screens to create the bold outlines and shapes. I'm thinking about how the artist might have been feeling, making this work, and how he’s using an image of wild dogs or wolves. What does that mean? The image is a stack of three animals against a stark black background. I wonder if the animals represent something about our own pack mentality, or about the way we perceive the natural world. I see the graphic quality of the poster, the way the shapes create a sense of depth and movement. I also think about the history of printmaking, the way that artists have used this medium to communicate ideas and make statements. It makes me feel like being an artist is part of a larger conversation.
