Nicholas Roerich painted "Covenant of Teacher" with what looks like tempera, achieving a luminous and otherworldly effect. The colours feel deliberately chosen, not quite naturalistic, but deeply felt. I'm drawn to the way Roerich layers these mountain ranges, one behind the other. The paint application is thin and matte, allowing the colours to speak. Look at how the blue of the mountains in the middle ground shifts and changes, creating a sense of depth and atmosphere. There’s a real simplicity here, a reduction of form to its essence. It reminds me of some of Marsden Hartley's landscapes, where he's simplifying and flattening the picture plane, pushing towards a symbolic representation of nature. Roerich seems less interested in the specific details of a place than in capturing its spiritual essence. In the end, it's the emotional resonance of the piece that stays with you.
