Curatorial notes

Nicholas Roerich’s ‘Santana’ presents us with a landscape in watercolor, a medium known for its fluidity and light. Roerich builds up these massive forms using translucent washes and careful gradations, giving the mountains a monumental presence that feels both solid and ethereal. I love the way the pigment pools and settles on the paper, creating subtle variations in tone and texture. Look at the way the blues deepen and intensify in the shadows, contrasting with the pale yellows of the sunlit peaks. There's this small figure tucked away in a cave, almost swallowed by the scale of the landscape. It's a reminder of the human presence within these vast spaces, a figure of contemplation nestled in the heart of nature. The more I look, the more I am reminded of Marsden Hartley, another artist who found solace and inspiration in the mountains. Ultimately, Roerich's painting invites us to slow down, to contemplate the beauty and mystery of the natural world, and to find our own place within it.
