Wang Xinfu made this painting, “Winter Campus,” and immediately I’m thinking about that moment the brush hits the canvas. I love the way the surface is built up, stroke upon stroke, like a kind of loving attention to detail. The colours are muted, earthy greens and browns, with little flecks of red and white peeking through. It's so interesting, it feels like the artist wasn't afraid to make a mess, to let things get a little chaotic. I can imagine Wang standing in front of the canvas, maybe on a cold day, trying to capture the feeling of winter on campus. Did he layer it up all in one go, or did he let it sit and come back to it? There's a rhythm to those marks, a kind of dance between control and letting go. It reminds me of some of Guston's later works, that kind of raw, unfiltered expression. I feel like painters are always talking to each other across time and space, you know? And that's where the real magic happens. The ambiguity. It is an invitation to dream.
