王新福 made this painting called "风絮芦苇" – I don't know when, but it's just glorious, look at that texture. The colours are amazing, buttery yellows, grey greens, little hints of blue, but really it's the impasto that grabs you, isn’t it? You just want to run your fingers across it. Each mark seems to have been made with real intention. It's almost sculptural, like he's carving the paint into these luscious forms. There’s one spot, about a third of the way down on the right, where he’s mixed orange and black and yellow together – that little flick of the wrist just makes the whole thing sing. This feels a bit like Van Gogh, just that same love of the stuff of paint itself, that willingness to let the process take over and see where it leads.
