Robert Huot made "Rocor" using green, black, and red paints. What a combination! The concentric maze of forms creates a visual pathway that both encloses and releases the eye. I can imagine Huot carefully measuring and masking off each section, layering color upon color. The surface looks quite smooth, which suggests the paint was applied thinly. Perhaps he wanted to minimize texture and draw attention to the graphic interplay of positive and negative space, like a game of chess. The sharp edges and flat planes feel very Pop Art to me, reminiscent of artists like Ellsworth Kelly or Frank Stella. But there’s also something almost architectural, like a blueprint for some kind of utopian structure, a sanctuary. Artists are always riffing off each other, aren’t they? Huot’s painting reminds us that every artwork is part of an ongoing conversation, remixing ideas and inspiring new ways of seeing the world. It's a conversation that we're all invited to join!
