Editor: This is "Winter Garden 2," a 2019 ink and graphite print by Pavlo Makov. It’s this intriguing network of lines connecting different architectural and natural elements. There's something map-like about it, but also very dreamlike. How do you interpret this work? Curator: What catches my eye immediately is the tension between the organic and the geometric. Notice the careful lines connecting disparate elements—birds in flight, architectural structures, potted plants. Do you feel this juxtaposition reveals a kind of yearning for harmony? Perhaps the artist is attempting to chart the connections that memory and association create? Editor: That's interesting. I was focused on the somewhat melancholy tone, the starkness of the lines. But I see what you mean about harmony. It's like the birds are messengers, carrying something between these places. Curator: Indeed. And birds are so often symbolic of freedom and transition, messengers across worlds. And these architectural structures, look at them closely; they each feel imbued with significance, like characters in a play. Does the arrangement suggest a hierarchy, or more of a cyclical relationship between these buildings and the natural world? Editor: I think cyclical. They feed into each other. The water source in the center connecting each. Is that a reference to something in particular? Curator: Potentially. Water as source, as connection…It resonates deeply with foundational myths and symbol systems across many cultures, evoking cycles of life, purification, and the subconscious. Seeing how Makov uses this timeless symbol invites us to ponder the wellsprings of creativity. What will you carry with you? Editor: Definitely the cyclical reading, it creates meaning out of chaos! Curator: Exactly, it pulls these potent images together to be a meaningful connection.
