This large saucer was created by the Worcester Porcelain Works in England, sometime after 1751, using porcelain. The blue and white floral design is a direct reference to Chinese porcelain, which was highly prized in Europe at the time. Worcester Porcelain Works was founded in 1751, during a period of intense interest in replicating the techniques and styles of Asian ceramics. Porcelain was a luxury item, and its production and trade were closely tied to European economic and colonial expansion. By imitating the style of highly sought after imported goods, Worcester was able to capitalize on the fashion for exoticism and cater to the tastes of the wealthy. The existence of this object demonstrates that the consumption of art objects is always related to larger structures of trade and cultural exchange. To further understand this work, we might consider historical research into the British porcelain industry.
