Giuseppe Santomaso made "The Window" in 1962, and it looks like it's made from some kind of printmaking technique. It's all about the process, this piece, you can feel him working it out. The colors are kind of earthy, like browns and reds, but then there are these pops of blue and yellow that keep it from being too serious. There's something really beautiful about the way the colors are layered on top of each other, like a conversation. And I love the way he uses line – it's so gestural and expressive, like he's really trying to capture the feeling of being in that space. See how the lines form the shape of the window, but then they also kind of dissolve into the background? It reminds me a little bit of some of the early Cubist stuff, like Picasso or Braque, but with a more personal, intuitive feel. For me, it's about how we see the world, not as a fixed thing, but as something that's always in flux.
