Alekos Kontopoulos made ‘The Night Comes’ with oil on canvas, and its all about how process can take over. I love the geometric structures created with color blocking. Kontopoulos’ process feels intuitive. Look at that bright yellow rectangle—it’s like a shaft of light cutting through the darkness, but it’s also a flat shape, pushing against the picture plane. The texture is crucial here: thick daubs of paint create a tactile surface, a record of the artist’s hand. And those little red squares! They add this jarring element, like the artist is conducting an experiment. This all over approach makes me think of Milton Resnick, whose work also embraced the physicality of paint and the messy vitality of the artistic process. Ultimately, ‘The Night Comes’ invites us to embrace ambiguity. It's a puzzle, a poem, a feeling.
