Editor: This is Wilhelmina Barns-Graham's "Lava Movement, La Geria" from 1983. It seems to be on paper, a mix of watercolor and pencil maybe? The textures are really interesting. What can you tell me about it? Curator: I'm interested in how Barns-Graham uses such economical materials to convey the raw physicality of the Lanzarote landscape. Pencil and watercolor, readily available, become tools to explore the intense volcanic forces that shaped the island. How does her process mirror the geological processes at play? Editor: That's a great point! It's like she's using simple means to represent something immense and powerful. I never thought of it that way. Curator: Exactly. It's not just a pretty picture; it's an engagement with the materials and labor that form our world. Editor: I see it now! The simplicity makes it even more powerful. Thanks for sharing your perspective! Curator: My pleasure. It's always rewarding to consider the making of art in relation to its subject.

Barns-Graham was born and trained in Scotland. In the late 1930s she moved to St Ives in Cornwall, where she became acquainted with Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. La Geria is a formation of laval rock on the island of Lanzarote. Barns-Graham first visited the Canary Islands in the late 1950s and they have continued to influence her work. This drawing is a late example of her abiding fascination with natural forms, especially glaciers rocks and lava, first seen in her glacier paintings of 1949 to 1951. Gallery label, September 2004
