Editor: So, this watercolor is "A Watermill at Dunham Massey" by Peter De Wint. It's lovely. I'm really drawn to the texture of the building, it feels so tangible. What do you see in this piece? Curator: The rough, unfinished quality points to the labor involved. De Wint is depicting a site of production, but notice how the materiality of the paint itself mimics the weathered surfaces of the mill. It challenges the distinction between the working building and the artwork. Editor: That's a great point! The building *is* the artwork, in a way. Thanks! Curator: Precisely. Considering the social context, the commodification of labor and land is very much part of this piece's creation.
