Strafgevangenis Ommerschans, huismunt geslagen op last van de Maatschappij van Weldadigheid ter waarde van 25 cent 1818 - 1859

This is a small, round coin minted by the Dutch Society of Benevolence for use in the Ommerschans prison between 1818 and 1859. The coin is 4.4 cm in diameter and weighs 29.77 grams. The obverse side bears the letters “OS” while the reverse shows the number "25" inscribed in large numerals, representing the value of the coin in cents. The coin is now part of the Rijksmuseum's collection. This is a significant artifact in the history of Dutch penal reform, a time when humanitarian efforts were undertaken to improve prison conditions.
