This anonymous token was minted in the Netherlands for use at the Ommerschans penal colony. The colony was established by the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid, or Society of Benevolence, which sought to address poverty through agricultural labor. This crude coin, stamped with "OS" on one side and "2 ½" on the other, offers a glimpse into the daily life within a 19th-century Dutch penal institution. The very existence of this token underscores the self-contained nature of the Ommerschans, where the Society of Benevolence sought to control every aspect of the inmates' lives, including their access to currency. Was this an effort at social reform or a means of reinforcing social hierarchies? Further research into the Society's records, prison ledgers, and economic policies of the time would reveal a more nuanced picture. By examining such artifacts, we gain insight into the social and institutional context that shaped the lives of those within its walls.
