Yervand Kochar’s *Painting In Space* is a sculpture, of course, but the way the pigment swims on the metal makes me think about painting as a way of making things, not representing them. There’s a fleshy pink tone on one side of this thing that is very painterly, even the word sounds like paint! It reminds me that paint is more than just color: it is a material, a substance, something that can be pushed around, layered, and manipulated. Look how the blue and green areas are thin and runny, like watercolor, while the yellows and reds are more opaque, almost crusty. That dark, almost mournful blue on the lower half seeps into everything, binding the sculpture together, but it’s not a sad blue, it’s more like a knowing blue. This makes me think of Picasso's forays into sculpture, or even the colorful constructions of Lissitzky. Ultimately, though, Kochar seems to be asking us to consider what painting *can be*, rather than what it *is*. What do you think?
