This print called "Jongens-spelen" or "Boys Games" was made by Jan de Haan in the Netherlands at an unknown date. It's a lithograph, a printmaking technique that became popular in the 19th century, allowing for mass production of images. The print depicts a variety of children's games. What does it tell us about the social values of the time? Notice that all the children are boys; where are the girls? These games are very active: where do the children play them? What social class do they seem to belong to? These are all questions we might ask as historians interested in childhood and play. By studying visual sources such as this one, along with other historical documents, such as archival records and publications, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of the history and culture.
