This is a lithograph called *De gevolgen van den oorlog* by Gordinne from the Rijksmuseum collection. It's an interesting piece, made using lithography which means it’s printed, not painted, and has this flat, graphic quality to it. There's a real focus on storytelling here, like a comic strip before comics were really a thing. The colors are muted, almost like a faded memory, and the lines are simple, direct. I’m drawn to the second scene, where the children are walking with sticks. There is one figure waving his stick in the air, full of youthful energy and mischief. The choice to depict the consequences of war through children's games adds a layer of poignant innocence to the work. You can see echoes of other narrative artists, like Hogarth, maybe, but filtered through a simpler, more childlike lens. Art is always a conversation, a back-and-forth across time, and this print definitely has something to say.
