Sarah Morris’s Hornet is a geometric mural, constructed of tessellated triangles and squares that meet to create starburst patterns in black, yellow, orange, blue, and gray. The fragmented geometric forms resonate with ancient symbols of chaos and order. The star, for instance, a recurring motif, is a universal symbol of guidance, hope, and the divine. Yet here, the motif is abstracted, broken into smaller, angular components, each encased within a rigid grid, evoking a sense of fragmented unity. This contrast reminds us of the cyclical nature of symbols and the dialectical dance between chaos and order. From ancient cosmological maps to contemporary abstract art, the symbolic language of geometric form echoes through time, reflecting our perpetual quest to understand our place in the cosmos, and its impact on our subconscious. The power of the work resides in its capacity to elicit primal emotions and engage viewers on a deep, subconscious level. The piece, in its essence, illustrates how symbols resurface, evolve, and take on new meanings in different historical contexts.
