Pat Lipsky made this ‘French Painting’ with what looks like acrylic on canvas, but I could be wrong. I love how she approaches mark-making here; it feels like a joyful, almost mathematical, process. Look at the surface. Isn't it something? The paint isn’t super thick, but you can tell she’s worked it, pushing the medium around to get this tactile quality. It's as though Lipsky is having a colorful conversation with geometry. If you zero in on those greyish squares in the center, you'll see how each one is subtly different, like a little world of its own. Some are smooth, some have brushstrokes, but all are playing with light, inviting you to lose yourself in a sea of grays. Lipsky’s piece reminds me of the later work of Sean Scully, where he uses a similar grid-like structure to create a sense of rhythm and balance. It's a cool reminder that art is just a continuous, cross generational conversation where ideas are always being remixed and reinterpreted.
