This headdress was made by Kim Mun Lantien, and it lives here at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The pattern-making here is so fascinating, it looks like a combination of weaving and embroidery. I like how it shows the handwork of artmaking. Looking closely, you can see how the texture and color tell a story. The embroidery is done in a striking dark blue, almost black. It contrasts with the light natural tone of the woven cotton, which feels so soft and yielding. The loose strands create a tactile rhythm, don't they? Your eye jumps across the surface, dancing with the energy of the maker. The whole piece reminds me of a Sheila Hicks weaving, or maybe even a Louise Bourgeois fabric sculpture. It's a reminder that art is always in conversation. Ultimately, this headdress invites us to wonder, dream, and make connections between different worlds.
