This photograph of Koosje Ochse, sitting at a table in front of a beach house, was made by an anonymous photographer. I wonder what that day was like. A long time ago, I bet. There is this gorgeous, ornate frame around the image - green with white decorations. I love those old fashioned borders - it makes me wonder about who picked it out, who they were trying to impress. Photographs are tricky because they suggest so much, but say so little. How do you capture a feeling with just a camera? It's a moment that's trying to be held still. I guess that's what painters are trying to do too; make something fixed that continues to speak. It's like we're all talking to each other across time, across image making practices, all the time!
