Leendert Bolle created this bronze art medal in 1934 for the Association for Medal Art. Look at how Bolle worked the metal, almost like clay, to capture the textures of the bird's feathers, giving them a tactile presence. There’s this muted, almost earthy quality to the bronze that feels very grounded. You can almost feel the weight of it, the coolness of the metal. I am drawn to the contrast between the smooth surface of the medal and the fine, almost etched details of the bird’s plumage. It's a dance between form and texture, light and shadow. The curve of the wing mirrors the circular edge, creating this sense of contained energy. The tiny boat on the ocean, compared to the large bird, is such a sweet image. You know, this medal reminds me a little bit of some of the work of Constantin Brâncuși, the way he distilled forms down to their essence. It seems to me that art, whatever form it takes, is always a conversation across time.
