This print, made in 2016 by EtchingRoom1, has got such an incredible range of tones and marks, it’s as if the artist is physically building the block of flats, one little square at a time. Looking at the repeated forms of the balconies and windows, you can feel the artist working with such care and precision. It’s a delicate dance between control and chance, where each tiny mark contributes to the overall structure and feeling. The artist might have been thinking of how the different textures and patterns interact, how they create a sense of depth and space. You almost want to touch it, feel the surface, trace the lines with your fingers. The scribbled notes on the architecture are just amazing. And that hazy, indistinct, purple squiggle to the left of the image! It is as if the artist is in an ongoing conversation with other makers, all trying to capture something elusive and beautiful.
