This is the back of a letter to Philip Zilcken, postmarked in France. The date 'Mars 21' is written near the French stamp, but the year is absent. As an art historian, I'm interested in what can be gleaned about the context of this letter. Letters are fascinating objects. They are usually considered outside of the traditional 'art world', and yet they are an important way to understand the networks of communication that sustain that world. Letters such as this one can reveal personal relationships, political alliances and artistic influences. Further investigation would be required to fully contextualize this letter. Looking at postal archives and biographical details for both Jeanne Erlich and Philip Zilcken would help clarify their relationship. More importantly, understanding their relationship will shed light on the artistic, social, and political circumstances in which this letter was created.
