Alfred Henry Forrester rendered these five designs for decorated plates on a single sheet, though the date remains unspecified. Notice the vine motif in the top design, a symbol deeply rooted in classical antiquity. Vines, particularly grapevines, were associated with Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, ecstasy, and fertility. Think of how this symbol proliferates across Roman art, adorning mosaics, sculptures, and frescoes, often evoking themes of celebration and abundance. But consider also how this motif transcends time, reappearing in Christian art to represent the Eucharist and Christ's blood. The tendrils, leaves, and grapes, once emblems of pagan revelry, are transformed into symbols of spiritual nourishment. It is this non-linear progression, this cyclical return and reinterpretation of symbols, that fascinates me – a testament to the enduring power of images across cultural epochs.
